Vernon Walks at the Rockville Public Library
In partnership with the Vernon Senior Center, Vernon Housing Authority, and Rockville General Hospital, the Rockville Public Library has received $4,444 in grant funding from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, New England Region, for our project Vernon Walks: Promoting Health Literacy and Community Fitness in Vernon/Rockville.
During the one-year grant project period the library will provide health information workshops as well as regular fitness classes, including tai-chi, yoga, and a walking club.
The library will also add up-to-date health and fitness books and DVDs to the Rockville Public Library collection, develop a pedometer lending program, and establish health information terminals in multiple locations in town.

HEALTH INFORMATION TERMINALS:
Look out for health information terminals at the Rockville Public Library, Vernon Senior Center, Town Hall, and more. These stations will feature chromebooks connected to National Library of Medicine resource: Medline Plus, medlineplus.gov.
Medline Plus brings you free, up-to-date information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand.
You can use MedlinePlus to learn about the latest treatments, look up information on a drug or supplement, find out the meanings of words, or view medical videos or illustrations.*

UPCOMING EXERCISE PROGRAMS:
Starting on June 12, Walking Club will meet every Wednesday at 10:00 in front of the library. Walks will last around 45 minutes, including light stretching. All ages and abilities welcome. Sneakers recommended. Walking Club will be canceled if there’s rain.

Come by the library for tai-chi classes with local instructor Susan Barlow. Tai-chi helps to calm the mind, improve flexibility and balance, and strengthen muscles and bones. This class is for all ages and includes a series of warm-ups and Qi Gong exercises. Mats provided.

Local instructor, Susan Barlow, will bring yoga’s many benefits to all who are willing to give it a try. This class is for all ages and will help participants increase their strength and mobility. Yoga mats provided.

Pedometer Lending Library
Keep track of your fitness goals and the progress that you’ve made!
The library has purchased 15 Ozo Fitness Digital Pedometers that we will lend out to patrons in the same way that we lend out new books. These easy-to-use pedometers can be put in a pocket or clipped to your clothing and will measure steps, distance, and calories burned. You can check them out for two weeks at a time with one renewal.
